SS21/22 AUSTRALIAN STYLE

If you were to gaze into a crystal ball for a glimpse into Spring/Summer fashion in the land down under, this is what you’d find...

Palm Springs Chic

Mid-century modern inspired looks. We’re seeing this influence in architecture and we’ll be seeing it in fashion trends too. Gorgeous silhouettes in a palette of colours…everything from whites through to bolds in plains and retro patterning and with a distinct glam component. Dresses, kaftans, jumpsuits, wide leg pants (yes, they’re still going to be around!) and capri pants. Heavy reliance on accessories to complete this resort look; large sunglasses, statement jewellery (earrings and cuffs particularly, of resin and/or metallic materials), bold patterned head scarves, broadbrim hats and statement bags will have you looking like you've stepped straight off an iconic Slim Aaron's shoot.

Yellow + Neutrals

We’ve seen Cue embrace it at this year’s Afterpay Australian Fashion Week. The yellow is slightly muted (much more complexion friendly for us fair-skinned types than the mustard yellow that has been everywhere the past few seasons!) and it also works divinely with the shade referred to as Desert Gold.

All White, all white, all whiiiite!

White on white, especially in natural cottons will be huge. Wide leg pants, drawstring details and complex layering of interesting pieces with flossing and strapping to create shape around the body are all on the cards. It’s a crisp look with a distinct resort feel. Keep it all white head to toe or call in your metallics for extra luxe.

Australian labels Christopher Esber (Spring 2021 Collection) and White Story have shown us how to do it with ease, as has Dior.

The Slip Dress

Hello, this is the 90’s returning your call. Love it or hate it, the slip dress of the 90’s is back complete with spaghetti straps (add a good strapless bra to your shopping list if you haven’t already got one!) – slinky, shimmery fabrics – silks and satins - will be popular.

The team at Australian label Silk Laundry nail it with beautiful bias cut pieces in irresistible prints and plains.
